Early 20th Century Milling Equipment

Through photos, artifacts and historic documents the Turn the Mill Around Campaign has gained glimpses of the types of milling that took place at Chapman’s Mill, but, in order to better tell the Mill’s story, we are always looking to deepen our knowledge of the milling process.  That’s why we were thrilled when we recently found an operation manual for the McCormick Grist Mill.  Located near Augusta County, Virginia, the McCormick mill is a much smaller mill than Chapman’s, but it’s early 1800’s construction date coupled with the manual’s in-depth explanation of the mechanics of the mill go a long way toward helping us understand how a mill of this era might have worked.

Take a look at the McCormick operation manual here.
